NDP urges government to reveal plan to protect good jobs in Quebec

Ottawa — New Democrats are urging the federal government to reveal their plan to support Bombardier and protect good jobs in Quebec.

“With the announcement that Bombardier will be cutting 1,500 jobs in Quebec, the federal government must send a positive message to our economic flagship and provide tangible support to the aerospace industry,” said NDP Transport critic Robert Aubin (Trois-Rivières).

Bombardier is facing a liquidity crisis and a financial rating agency downgraded its credit rating. But the federal government still hasn’t done anything to restore investors’ confidence in the C Series program and protect jobs in the long term. In their last budget, the federal government failed to provide funding for a sector that generated 211,000 jobs in 2015.

“These job cuts are bad news for the Quebec economy and aerospace industry. The Liberal government has not yet developed a strategy to help growth in this leading sector where skilled and well-paying jobs benefit workers. The government must stop dragging its feet and announce when it will provide funding for this economic flagship,” said NDP Quebec Lieutenant Alexandre Boulerice (Rosemont – La Petite Patrie).
